Why is CRI so important in Lighting ?

See how the beauty of apple in image changes according to increase in CRI rating, even with same lamp with same wattage and color temperature . Surprised ?

As showed from the image of apple above , explanation is not needed . Higher the CRI – gets the best view of product/surface. Large difference can be achieved in the Ambience/appearance  of  a space,  if lights change from lower CRI  lamps to Higher .

A red apple appears red because it reflects red wavelengths, but absorbs others.

But not all white light sources have the same amount of red wavelength light.

As a result, under different light sources, a red apple can reflect different amounts of red light, changing its appearance.

Cost for higher CRI Light are also high, but while considering below points the option of higher CRI is better

  • For Retail shops & Restaurants  –  High CRI lights can attract more people than LOW CRI lights because of the best color render that boosts the Products and ambience of the place .There are lot of experiments done by Architects &lighting designers to know the difference in number of customers coming before and after  switching Low to high CRI lamps .

  • Hotels & Homes – High CRI lights can boost happy atmosphere,no doubt in that . Happy Customers will  increase more business and happy homes have happy family.

If two lamp with same watts & same  color temperature but with different CRI, a good Lighting Designer will definitely go for High CRI Products for the best result. Do a mock-up to see the difference. Don’t get confused with brightness & Color temperature with CRI ,Its different .

High CRI brings out true Color

There are lot of  research going in the Lighting industry to achieve higher CRI products with low Price .

Is CRI 98 the ideal color rendering?

In 1965, the International Commission on Illumination recommended the CIE colorimetric system, with a general color rendering index Ra to describe the color of the light source. Ra has been very successful and widely accepted by the lighting industry. However, is CRI 98 or even CRI 100 the best CRI?

What is CRI?  The color rendering index definition

A color rendering index (CRI) is a quantitative measure of the ability of a light source to fully reveal the colors of various objects, in comparison with an ideal or natural light source.
